Indo-Pak hostilities have escalated following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on April 22 which killed 26 Hindu pilgrims. India blames the attack on Pakistan-based militants such as Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives believed to be backed by Pakistan’s Interservices Intelligence (ISI). India retaliated through “Operation Sindoor” with missile strikes over precise coordinates of suspected terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan-administered areas on May 7. In response, Pakistan’s retaliatory drone and missile hit killed on both sides also. The incident is among the worst escalations since the 1999 Kargil conflict

In a major step India stopped the Indus Waters Treaty on April 23 and water was released into the Jhelum River from the Uri Dam without announcement. This practice led to a great flood in Pakistan-administered Azad Kashmir and sharply increased hatred between the two nations.
