 Vizhinjam International Seaport Inauguration


A New Era for India's Maritime Trade​Prime Minister Narendra Modi will initiate the official operations of Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram on May 2, 2025. Built for ₹8,900 crore Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport serves as an advanced facility that promotes Indian maritime infrastructure while expanding international trading Strategic Significance. 



 India has Vizhinjam Port as its first facility specifically designed for container transshipment operations which places it 10 nautical miles from a major international shipping route. Its natural deep draft of 20 meters gives Vizhinjam Port the ability to receive big shipping vessels which decreases India's need for transocean shipping at Colombo port. 



Operational Milestones

To date the port entered trial operations in July 2024 and received its commissioning certificate in December 2024. In its operations the port has received 285 ships resulting in the processing of 593,000 TEUs of cargo. ​

Economic and Historical Context

Much beyond its contemporary functions the port carries significance as a historic maritime center from the time of the Kingdom of Travancore when it provided a trade connection between Kerala and international merchant routes. The restoration of this port will drive local trade growth along with job generation and facilitate India's engagement in worldwide maritime marketplace. ​

The first semi-automated deep-water international container transshipment port of India operates at present.

Since the commercial start the facility has processed 265 ships and 5.48 lakh TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units).
