India & France sign a mega 63,000 crore deal to BUY 26 Rafale-M aircraft for the Indian Navy

The defense agreement between India and France includes the purchase of 26 Rafale-Marine (Rafale-M) fighter jets from France at an estimated cost of rs.63000 crores which equals to $7.4 billion. The agreement of April 28, 2025 dedicated itself to improving the operational potential of the Indian Navy and specifically for aircraft carrier INS Vikrant operations.

Deal overview

The agreement encompasses the acquisition of 22 single-seater Rafale-M fighters and four twin-seater trainer variants. The delivery timeline spans 37 months starting from now up to 2030. The package contains detailed training programs alongside logistical backing and maintenance facilities. Through this agreement India aligns with its 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative through domestic production of specific deal components.

Strategic Significance

India takes a historic step to update its naval aviation capabilities by selecting new weapons that will replace its outdated fleet of Russian-origin MiG-29K jets. Indian forces selected the Rafale-M carrier-capable fighter variant from Dassault Aviation after they conducted thorough evaluations which led to its selection over Boeing's F/A-18 Super Hornet. The chosen option supports operational integration between the existing Indian Air Force Rafale fleet of thirty-six aircraft and navy fleet operations.

Geopolitical Context

This agreement demonstrates India's dedication to enhancing maritime security while it deals with rising Chinese maritime presence in the Indian Ocean region. Through improved strike capabilities deployed from carriers India wants to enhance its deterrence capabilities which protect its vital strategic interests
