Worsening Humanitarian Crisis and Escalating Conflict Grip Gaza and Russia-Ukraine Region
The past 24 hours were associated with dramatic events in two major areas of conflicts: the Gaza Strip in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine front. Humanitarian crisis is deteriorating in both regions in view of prevailing violence.
Gaza Starvation and Civilian Deaths under Blockade
The Gaza Strip is still in a situation of increasing humanitarian disaster. They said at least 18 people died of hunger on one day alone and humanitarian assistance is more blocked. The continued military activities by the Israeli and the strict control to outside access points has drastically limited the amounts of food and other medicinal provisions, which leave millions of Palestinians at the verge of starvation.
To the crisis, ground and air attacks by the Israeli killed at least 67 people seeking quick assistance. Eyewitlesses reported that desperate scenes of desperate civilians crowded around in the hope of getting any basic supply were shot down with fatal shots. Human right organisations have denounced the violence urging an immediate cessation of hostilities and the freedom of humanitarian assistance.
Protests swept Tel Aviv on Friday with thousands of Israelis taking to the streets demanding truce agreement and the release of hostages held by Hamas marking the increased pressure on ruling government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Russia-Ukraine: Drone War: Heightened
In the meantime, the war between Russia and Ukraine went a different direction last weekend when Ukraine started a series of more than 230 drone attacks on Moscow and other major Russian cities. To fight back, all the major airports in Moscow were temporarily closed with residents in the city claiming to have heard loud blasts and intercepted drones flying above the city.
It is one of the biggest Ukrainian drone attacks so far. It represents a change in strategy, it brings the war to the core of Russia. The drone attacks happened easily, with minimal casualties but the psychological and strategic effect is enormous. This has caused more war fears as Russian authorities have vowed to retaliate
International Response and Demands of Peace
Both situations have been met by a serious concern of the United Nations and some humanitarian agencies. The Secretary-General of the UN, Anto nio Guterres, urged once again to establish a ceasefire in Gaza and initiate repeated diplomatic negotiations in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He threatened that the world was looking at the collapse of humanity unless something should be done to avert this now.
Nonetheless, the diplomatic breakthrough has been non-existent despite all the wailing. The peace initiatives between the two regions are not taking off, with the political leaders holding to extreme stands.
Conclusion
The last 24 hours show that international peace is quite vulnerable and that all the nations must cooperate. Since the fundamental victims of geopolitical conflicts are civilians, world leaders are under pressure to strive more towards dialogue rather than destruction and humanity rather than hatred.
