Middle East Bureau June 13, 2025

The situation in the Middle East is becoming increasingly tense, as Israel conducted an extensive airstrike campaign targeting Iranian military and nuclear sites, being one of the most intensive provocations in the region over the past years. The operation has led to high profile casualties and caused Iran to retaliate immediately causing waves in the global markets and diplomatic communities.

At dawn on June 13, the Israeli air force conducted a synchronized air attack, which was said to have entailed more than 200 fighter jets and 100 or more precision bombs. The facilities at Natanz and Fordow were the main nuclear facilities of Iran that were targeted alongside a number of military command posts, missile production facilities, and IRGC facilities.

Witnesses in Tehran and Isfahan reported of the night sky being lit up by explosions, sirens and mass panic.

The General Hossein Salami, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran, was among the dead as well as high-ranking nuclear scientists and military planners. Although Iran has not verified the full list, its state media reported its “major losses.”

In hours, Iran carried out a series of drone and missile assaults against Israeli air bases and other strategic facilities. Most of them were however intercepted by Israeli defense systems, including the Iron Dome.

oxygen Global Reactions & UN Emergency Session

United Nations: The UN Security Council met in an emergency session in New York and world powers called upon restraint and diplomacy.

United States: The White House referred to the need of de-escalation, though it did not deny that the American troops in the area are at high alert.

What’s Next?

Analysts caution that the crisis might get even out of control in case the diplomatic efforts break down. Israel seems to be ready to commit to long-term interaction, and Iran will probably choose to target its regional affiliates, including Hezbollah and Iraq militias, in additional retaliation.

The observers of the Middle East conflict feel that the next 48 hours would be crucial in deciding whether this would escalate into a full-scale war or a controlled escalation.

 Last Word

The theatric rise of tensions between two of the most influential states of the Middle East represents a threatening new stage of a conflict that has been smouldering for years. The international community is nervously waiting to see what the diplomats can do to head off another disastrous war in the already troubled region
