Kush Maini Makes History by Being the First Indian to Win a Formula 2 Race at Monaco
Kush Maini has made history in Indian motorsport by becoming the first Indian to win a Formula 2 race, taking the victory in the Sprint Race at Monaco on May 24, 2025.
Racing for DAMS Lucas Oil, the 24-year-old from Bengaluru dominated the whole race on the demanding layout of Monte Carlo. Since the grid was determined with a reverse format, Maini started first and he kept the lead until the finish while displaying both skill and calm.
It was Prakash’s first Indian win at Monaco. I feel extremely honored and it’s something I’ve always wanted. I would like to say ‘thank you’ to DAMS and everyone who’s backed me. I’m still hopeful,” Maini shared after the race.
Indian patriots celebrated the victory with their national anthem being played as Hima went on the podium.
After Maini won the competition, Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, praised him by tweeting, “Your success makes all of us proud and the country is proud of you as well.” Kush Maini making history as he becomes the 1st Indian to win an F2 race in Monte Carlo… We are happy to have you working with us at Mahindra Racing” .
Maini’s win in the Baku Grand Prix comes after his earlier success in Hungary, when he took his first Formula 2 title because the first winner was ruled out.
Having worked as a reserve in both Formula 1 and Formula E, Maini’s recent progress is fueling hopes that India will return to Formula 1.
With a family background in motorsports—brother Arjun is a racing driver and uncle Chetan developed India’s first electric car—Kush Maini’s success is a big moment for Indian motorsport.
India’s historic victory has encouraged many new racers across the country to be inspired by Maini’s achievements.
Kush Maini: India’s Promising New Name in Motorsport
Born in Bengaluru, Karnataka, on September 22, 2000, Kush Maini is quickly moving up as a leading name in international motorsport. His success at Monaco in the FIA Formula 2 Championship has made him the first Indian to claim a Formula 2 victory at this famous track.
In the beginning, Maini proved himself successful in karting before moving to cars. As he climbed up, he participated in championships such as Italian F4, British F3 and FIA Formula 3. Earning a place in the Alpine Academy, he also acted as a reserve for both Alpine F1 Team and Mahindra Racing in Formula E.
Since his family has ties to the racing world, Kush has the brother Arjun as a fellow racing driver and the uncle Chetan as the inventor of India’s first electric car, the REVA .
